PIANO GURU is directed by Melbourne pianist Dr. Nicholas Young, who embarked on his piano journey nearly 25 years ago (and is still going). Nick serves a variety of students, schools, composers, producers and music organisations as teacher and professional pianist, and is passionate about introducing the piano & smart piano practices to people from all walks of life.
The PIANO GURU service carries out Nick's dream to equip all piano lovers with versatile, long-term skills and understanding, applying the quickest methods supported by thorough, context-specific explanation; to enable every pianist to love, not hate, practising the piano; and to inspire in every pianist a spirit of independent musical exploration outside of the lesson studio. PIANO GURU sessions are developed through careful review of popular pedagogies, teacher and student feedback from real trials, and in dialogue with Melbourne's leading innovators in performance, pedagogy, academia, event production and multimedia production.
Some arrangements don't suit the skills you have so far, making them frustrating to read and learn. And some arrangements are just plain full of mistakes.
We can identify corrections or amendments to your sheet music that will fit your playing level, technique, and learning objectives. This may range from small, simple corrections, to complete re‑writes from scratch.
If no arrangements exist yet for your music, we'll design one for you.
We offer this service to our students as well as those who learn piano outside of Piano Guru. Contact us for further information or to discuss your needs.

The typical length for beginner lessons, covering all the essentials such as fingering, playing technique, note-reading, and basic scale and chord fundamentals.
Lesson materials are usually included at no extra charge. Where significant additional materials or assistance is requested, a quote will be provided.
Covers essentials as well as more in-depth exploration of additional skills and understanding in harmony, pattern recognition, keyboard geography and theory.
Recommended for pianists at the intermediate level, or for beginners seeking an intensive start to their learning.
Comprehensive sessions covering fundamental techniques, extensive repertoire, theoretical, improvisational, analytical concepts, and advanced performance skills.
Recommended for pianists who have prior intermediate to advanced experience, and those who are preparing for grade or diploma examinations.
